Common Patient Questions
What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a false tooth used to fill the gap created by a missing tooth or teeth. Gaps can cause surrounding teeth to shift, leading to changes in your bite and possible pain. Bridges use the two teeth on either side of the gap as anchors, with a false tooth (pontic) fused between them.
Why are dental bridges important?
Leaving a gap between teeth can cause shifting, bite changes, and discomfort. A dental bridge restores your smile, improves chewing, maintains your bite, and helps prevent further dental issues.
What types of dental bridges are available?
– Traditional fixed bridge: The most common type, using porcelain crowns over the surrounding teeth to anchor the false tooth (made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics).
– Cantilever bridge: Used when teeth are only present on one side of the gap, usually in the front teeth where less chewing force occurs.
– Resin-bonded bridge: Uses metal bands bonded with resin to hold a plastic false tooth in place, also suited for front teeth.
How is a dental bridge placed?
A minimum of two visits are required.
First visit: The surrounding teeth are prepared (filed for crowns), impressions are taken and sent to the lab, and a temporary bridge is placed.
Second visit: The temporary bridge is removed, and the custom bridge from the lab is fitted and adjusted. Additional visits may be needed for fine-tuning.
What materials are used in dental bridges?
Bridges are typically made from porcelain fused to metal, ceramics, or plastic (resin-bonded bridges). The choice depends on the location of the missing tooth and the patient’s needs.
How long does a dental bridge last?
With proper care, dental bridges can last 5–15 years or longer. Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are essential to extend their lifespan.
Who is a good candidate for a dental bridge?
Patients with one or more missing teeth, healthy surrounding teeth to support crowns, and good overall oral health are typically good candidates. Your dentist will evaluate your bite, gums, and overall dental health before recommending a bridge.
How do I care for a dental bridge?
Practice good oral hygiene: brush twice daily, floss carefully around the bridge, and use special floss threaders if needed. Avoid chewing hard objects and maintain regular dental checkups to ensure the bridge remains secure and functional.
How many visits are needed for a dental bridge?
At least two visits are required: one for preparation and impressions, and one for fitting the permanent bridge. Additional visits may be necessary for adjustments.
