Common Patient Questions
What is a dental filling?
A filling is a procedure where the dentist removes the decayed portion of a tooth and fills it with another material. Common options include composite (tooth-colored) fillings and amalgam (metal) fillings.
What are composite fillings?
Composite fillings are tooth-colored and can be closely matched to your natural teeth. They are durable for small to medium cavities, require less tooth removal than amalgam, and are ideal for front or visible teeth due to their natural appearance.
When can a composite filling be used?
Composite fillings are used for cavities, chipped or broken teeth, and reducing small gaps between teeth.
How is a filling procedure done?
First, the dentist numbs the area and removes decay. A bonding agent is applied and cured with a special light. The filling material is placed in thin layers, hardened, then polished for comfort and proper bite alignment.
Are you open on Saturdays for fillings?
Yes! Sierra Dental Practice offers dental fillings on Saturdays by appointment, in addition to Monday–Thursday hours.
Can composite fillings be used for cosmetic repairs as well as cavities?
Yes. Composite fillings are commonly used not only to treat cavities, but also to repair chipped or broken teeth and to reduce small gaps between teeth. Because they are tooth-colored, they provide both functional and cosmetic benefits.
Do dental fillings hurt?
Fillings are typically painless because the area is numbed beforehand. You may feel slight pressure during the procedure, but most patients are comfortable throughout the visit.
How long does a dental filling last?
Composite fillings can last many years with proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups. Longevity depends on factors like bite pressure, location of the filling, and daily habits.
Can I eat right after getting a filling?
For composite fillings, you can usually eat once the numbness wears off. It’s best to avoid very hard or sticky foods for the rest of the day.
What happens if I don’t treat a cavity with a filling?
Untreated cavities can grow larger, leading to pain, infection, or the need for more extensive treatment such as a crown or root canal. Early treatment helps prevent complications.
Will my tooth be sensitive after a filling?
Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is common and usually temporary. It typically resolves within a few days to a couple of weeks as the tooth adjusts.
